The Gift Gazelle story is really quite unique. It started nearly twenty years ago when founder, Vincent Davis, began his teaching career in the Miami Dade County Public School System as a middle school teacher of students with special needs. The year was 1997, when he discovered the unmistakable power of gift giving and its positive effect on student achievement. It is a well-known fact that students respond very well to praise, and believe it or not, praise at some level is a form of gifting. Although praise is not as tangible as giving someone a physical gift, it serves the same purpose. It says job well done, or I am very proud of you! During the Christmas season of the aforementioned year, Vincent had an epiphany. One of his lower achieving students suddenly was performing very well academically. After careful analysis and a brief consultation with the student, Vincent realized that the student’s spike in achievement was partly attributed to his motivation to receive a gift of a Play Station video game console for Christmas. The agreement the student’s parent made with him was if he improved his grades, then she would purchase the gaming system. Prior to this experience, Vincent admittedly had no clue that there is a direct correlation between gifting and student achievement. This experience has definitely planted the seed for Gift Gazelle, Vincent just did not realize it at that time. Consequently, throughout his tenure as an educator, Vincent has consistently used gifting as a strategy to promote student achievement. One year he purchased vocabulary workbooks for all of his Intensive Reading students and presented them as a gift to each student. Remarkably, as he assigned homework from those books, he noticed a drastic increase in the number of students returning their homework.
